Free Upgrade? Um... yes, please.

Wharf Master's Inn, Point Arena (in Arena Cove)

My last overnight on the road before setting up residence in Sonoma for a few days was in Point Arena. Yeah, I'd live there. If I didn't actually have to live there. Like, if I could live in the room I had at Wharf Master's Inn and eat crab fresh from the wharf each day... I'd stay forever. I arrived in the dark (and I don't recommend driving too much on Route 1 after sunset if you don't have to... I saw some deer and was nervous about the curves and potential elk). This wasn't a problem. I was promptly offered a free room upgrade. Also not a problem. And when I was told that room 122 Lookout was one of the best rooms, I smiled politely and nodded - anything was going to be better than the cheapest room I had booked (which only had a bathtub. And actually, I was thrilled, because at home I only have a shower and was excited for a real bath).

And then I saw my room. Now, online reviews might knock this place for being a bit outdated, a tiny bit run-down. This is true. But my room was comfortable, had a gas fireplace/heater, queen with feather bed, large jacuzzi tub and shower, and a private deck with a spectacular ocean view. In fact, the best ocean view of the entire property. My original room - no view to speak of. The other building on the cliff with a view, not as good a view as the Lookout building. The other rooms in the Lookout Building, not as good a view as 122. So maybe I did luck out here. Hey, I'm not going to look a gift horse in the mouth. The inn keepers, a couple in their 50s new to hospitality, just 5 months on this job, were very eager to make sure I was happy with my new room. They want great Yelp! and Trip Advisor reviews. And by god, I will most certainly help them out with that. Win, win.

My room, Lookout 122, is the top-middle room of this building.
I sat out here after dinner with a 375ml bottle of wine and just looked at the stars, listened to the ocean.

The deck of 122.
View of the deck from interior of room 122.

Queen 4-poster with feather bed. Most of the furnishings in the rooms are antiques.

View of the room from the jacuzzi tub, showing the fireplace.

Cool old lamp. The whole room was done in this theme:
Vanity lights over the mirror, hand towel rack, also the other bedside lamp.
Kinda reminds me of Audrey II, though.
